Retail isn't the only thing booming in Walnut CreekFriday, September 24, 2010, 2:39pm PDT Send this story to a friend
More housing options in Walnut Creek are on the horizon.
I wrote a story for today’s print edition about a mini-retail boom in the works in Walnut Creek, one of the few places where new ground-up construction for retail is actually happening.
But, besides adding more retail space, developers are looking to build more multi-family housing in Walnut Creek.
The biggest project in the pipeline involves BRE Properties Inc., the San Francisco-based apartment giant, which wants to entitle a 596-unit project with 30,000 square feet of retail on a surface parking lot at the Walnut Creek BART station.
That project is interesting because it will bring more dense housing near the BART station, a trend that is finally materializing in Walnut Creek. Another project, 555 YVR, is currently selling units close to BART and is one of the first projects to market itself as transit-oriented development in Walnut Creek.
Another project in development includes Essex Property Trust’s The Village, a project that will contain 49 residential units and 37,000 square feet of retail space.
There’s also Delco Builders has a 65-unit project approved called Walden Park Commons that would replace 10 single family homes with a multi-family development. That sounds like a poster-child for creation of more density and sustainable living in the suburbs.
Would you move to Walnut Creek?
